While the weather still is a bit chilly and blustery, spring finally is getting serious about spending time in southeastern Minnesota.

That means more people will be spending time at Rochester's popular Silver Lake.

So it's that time of year again for Aaron Richardto hang up the "Open" sign in front of Silver Lake Boat and Bike Rentals. This is his ninth year on the banks of Silver Lake.

Working out of a new trailer, Richard has been making occasional appearances in the last couple of weeks as the spring weather has flickered on and off.

However, he and his team of five staffers plan to be out there every day starting May 1. They'll staff the business from 1 p.m. until about sunset on weekdays and from 11 a.m. until sunset on weekends.

While his lineup of canoes, bikes, paddle boats and kayaks is about the same as last year, he is beefing up one area.

"We've almost doubled our fleet of kayaks. They're really popular. We get a lot of regular customers coming down every week to kayak," Richard said.
