Heard on the Street: Saint Marys power plant to expand

As part of Mayo Clinic's ongoing growth in Rochester, work has started on a project to expand the Saint Marys Campus' power plant.

"The project will include a 5,000-square-foot addition onto the south side of the power plant at the Saint Marys Campus to increase plant cooling capacity," according to Kelley Luckstein,of Mayo Clinic.

The addition is needed to create space for a chiller and associated pumps and piping.

Grading for the project began recently. Luckstein estimates it will be completed by February 2016.

Silver Lake rental biz to set sail for season

While the weather still is a bit chilly and blustery, spring finally is getting serious about spending time in southeastern Minnesota.

That means more people will be spending time at Rochester's popular Silver Lake.

So it's that time of year again for Aaron Richardto hang up the "Open" sign in front of Silver Lake Boat and Bike Rentals. This is his ninth year on the banks of Silver Lake.

Working out of a new trailer, Richard has been making occasional appearances in the last couple of weeks as the spring weather has flickered on and off.

However, he and his team of five staffers plan to be out there every day starting May 1. They'll staff the business from 1 p.m. until about sunset on weekdays and from 11 a.m. until sunset on weekends.

While his lineup of canoes, bikes, paddle boats and kayaks is about the same as last year, he is beefing up one area.

"We've almost doubled our fleet of kayaks. They're really popular. We get a lot of regular customers coming down every week to kayak," Richard said.

Also look for him to bring back children's bikes this year. — Jeff Kiger
