New Med City bar and grill to start cooking on Tuesday

A new dining choice is firing up its grill in northwest Rochester on Tuesday.
The newly constructed Tavern 22 will open its doors at 3401 Northern Valley Place NE at 7 a.m. to start serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, said general manager Scott Schneider.
Schneider, known in Rochester for leading the former Rookies and later the Wicked Moose, is excited to show off the new 7,100-square-foot hillside restaurant and bar. It is next to the new North Pointe Dental clinic.
“It’s a brand new building that we built from the dirt up. That means we're able to do a lot of things that are revolutionary in the industry,” he said.
The building was originally intended as the third Rooster’s location in Rochester. When the pandemic pulled the plug on that idea, Schneider stepped in to work with developer A.J. Hawkins to create Tavern 22.
“We're looking to be a neighborhood grill with a nice menu with something for everybody,” he said.
While northeast Rochester already has Whistle Binkies, BB’s Pizza and the recently opened Purple Goat Kitchen and Bar , Schneider is confident there is a place for Tavern 22 in the mix.
“There are so many homes around here… There's a reason car dealerships always put themselves by each other. You want to create a little buzz in your area,” he said. “We all have a little bit of a different niche and yet we can all feed off each other and bring more people to the area.”
Schneider believes that cutting-edge equipment is one way Tavern 22 will set itself apart. The kitchen features a computerized flat top grill that has hydraulic arms to cook every burger, steak, piece of bacon, order of hashbrowns or whatever perfectly every time.
“In the past, I wouldn't have even considered having a nice skin-on piece of salmon or a New York strip or a parmesan crusted walleye. We're gonna have all three of them on our menu, beside the burgers and chicken breasts,” he said.
Beyond the grill, Tavern 22 will have a selection of salads, broasted chicken and more.
The dining room area has a quiet, family vibe, he explained, while the bar area features more TVs, pool tables and a garage door that opens onto the 50-seat patio with two outdoor fireplaces.
Once the doors are open, don’t expect Tavern 22 to be dark very often as its staff of 40 cooks and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
“There is a definite need for breakfast on this side of town,” said Schneider.
