A downtown Rochester eatery looked outside and upward to re-launch in the pandemic world.

Benedict’s Breakfast Heroes, described as "a modern diner," opened in a 3,700-square-foot spot on the skyway level of the new Hilton hotel at 10 E. Center St. in downtown Rochester last summer.

The 65-seat restaurant is known for its updated take on traditional breakfast, brunch and lunch fare such as omelets, various egg dishes, pancakes, Monte Christo sandwiches and chili, plus offering an array of creative cocktails.

Early the COVID-19 pandemic, Owner and Executive Chef Mike Rakun made the decision to shut down after a brief run of offering only takeout.

Recently, Benedict’s started serving again with the help of the hotel staff.

“They (the hotel management) came to us and said, “We have a great idea for you,” said Rakun.

The idea was to offer outdoor dining for Benedict’s customers on the Hilton’s fifth floor terrace.

“It’s like a pop-up restaurant,” he said. “Our beautiful new rooftop area comes at the perfect time, when people want to be outdoors and maintain distance, yet still be social and enjoy good food.”

To honor frontline healthcare workers, Rakun added that Benedict’s is offering a unique happy hour. On Mondays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., medical personnel with a valid ID proving their profession can enjoy bottomless mimosas.
