Med City caffeine lovers will have a new place to fuel up in 2021, when the new Scooter’s Coffee shop starts brewing on South Broadway.
Crews are busy transforming the former Daube’s Bakery/Flowerama building at 1608 S. Broadway into a new Scooter’s location, Rochester’s first. The spot on the corner of 16th Street Southwest and Broadway will give the new player a very visible perch for all of the commuters who regularly drive through that intersection.
Franchisee Angie Doohen is hoping for a “soft opening” by the end of January or in early February, and grand opening celebration slated for some time in the spring. She expects to have 15 to 20 employees on staff.
For folks not familiar with Omaha, Neb.-based Scooter’s, it has about 300 shops in 16 states. This will be the second in Minnesota. The first opened recently in Fairmont.
The menu offers a full selection of coffee and tea as well as fruit smoothies. One of its signature drinks is the Carmelicious latte along with a selection of candy bar-flavored lattes.
Its mission statement is, “Amazing people serving amazing drinks, amazingly fast.”
Scooter’s also sells quick food items ranging from breakfast burritos and maple waffle sausage and egg sandwiches to birthday cake pops and double chocolate muffins.
Of course, the Med City is brewing with strong caffeine competition. Cafe Steam, Moka, Lumen, Old Abe’s and Bravo Espresso all vie for local coffee drinkers’ attention and money, along with Dunn Bros., Caribou and the ubiquitous Starbucks.
Given the long list of local coffee shops and franchises, why introduce Scooter’s to the Med City?
“Scooter's Coffee is the fastest growing drive-thru coffee franchise in the country right now,” wrote Doohen. “It has proven to be a hit in many other cities of this size, and we wanted a place that was small enough to feel like a hometown but large enough to support a new brand of coffee.”
The big change to the South Broadway building will be the addition of a drive-thru window.
“The drive-thru truly is a key point in our business; making our products fast and easily accessible (in all weather types) for folks on the go,” wrote Doohen.
