From pies and burgers to molcajete and margaritas, change is on the way in Northwest Rochester

A busy Mexican restaurant in Southwest Rochester is starting work on a second Med City location in an empty northside building.

Brothers Medardo and Jorge Antonio Arcos and their families have seen the crowds steadily grow at their Los Arcos Kitchen and Cantina since it opened in September 2019 at 7386 Airport View Drive SW, near the Rochester International Airport. It has become so popular that it can take a while to get a table.

“Sometimes people are waiting an hour or two hours. If we open on the other side of town, then maybe they can go there if the wait is too long,” said Medardo Arcos.

The Arcos family has started an extensive remodel of the former north Baker's Square restaurant building at 3539 22nd Ave. Both of Rochester’s Bakers Square locations closed in January 2019. The south Baker Square building was recently demolished.

Medardo Arcos stressed that the project is in the very early stages and they have a lot of work to do. That means it is hard to estimate when the north Los Arcos might open, though they hope to launch sometime this summer.

This new location is not just to accommodate the growing crowd of Rochester customers, but it will make the restaurant more accessible to northside fans who don’t want to make the trek to the airport area.

“We have a lot of customers who say it is too far to come to this (airport) location very often,” said Medardo Arcos. “So we are opening a second restaurant on the north side.”

The Arcos family is also behind the successful Rancho Loco Grill & Bar restaurants in Cannon Falls and Red Wing. They came to Rochester with the help of Med City restaurateur and commercial real estate investor Hollandberry Pannekoeken owner Taso Psomas.

Psomas purchased the former Ground Round/331 Bar building by the airport and helped them open there.

To assist with the north location, Psomas purchased the former Bakers Square building for $750,000 on March 31 under the corporate umbrella of Ikaria LLC.

Psomas bought the former Bakers Square site from Rochester's Pie3539 LLC, led by Med City developer John Klopp.
