About four years after opening, a south Rochester car dealership is expanding.

Construction is expected to start soon on a 10,000-square-foot addition to the Subaru of Rochester dealership at 4840 Maine Ave. SE.

General Manager Todd Penz said Subaru needs more space as car sales increase and more customers are looking for the dealership to care for their vehicles.

“We’re adding 11 more technician bays ... This is part of our end-to-end vehicle solution that makes shopping and buying a vehicle as simple as possible,” he said. “It will increase our ability to serve more people faster and offer more efficient service.”

The goal is to wrap up the construction of the addition, which will also expand the parts department and the dealership lot, by midwinter.

With more bays and a bigger parts area, Penz anticipates needing to add more employees to his team of 70.

The dealership opened as Clements Chevrolet Cadillac Subaru in October 2016. In December 2017, Dan Penz and his son, Todd, split from Clements and officially purchased the Subaru dealership.

The Penzes acquired two more Rochester dealerships —Buick GMC and Nissan — from the Twin Cities-based Lupient Automotive Group in 2019.
