KASSON - Hy-Vee is almost ready to unveil its transformation of the former Erdman's County Market in Kasson.
The Iowa-based grocery chain will open the doors of the newly renovated store to the public at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
Hy-Vee says the more than 35,000-square-foot revamped and re-branded store will carry a total of 24,491 items, including 330 fresh produce items. The store will feature a full-service meat department, a pharmacy, a floral section and a Hy-Vee Market Grille Express eatery with seating.
The store is still hiring staff. Hy-Vee expects to employ 123 people, including 29 full-time positions.
Hy-Vee acquired the longtime Kasson grocery and announced its plans in September. It originally considered making the store into one of its Dollar Fresh locations, but that idea was discarded in the wake of community reaction.
Designed to serve smaller communities, Dollar Fresh typically offers fewer brand-name options and usually has more of a self-service meat and bakery offering. In contrast, a Hy-Vee brand store offers more one-on-one customer service and more specialized services, such as the bakery, and deli and/or butcher shop.
There are four Hy-Vee grocery stores in Rochester. There are also locations in Austin and Winona. Overall, Hy-Vee operates about 265 stores in eight Midwestern states with more in the pipeline.
