ELGIN - Instead of just Black Friday this year, Plainview-Elgin-Millville school fans geared up for some Black and Gold Friday shopping with the opening of a new fan gear store.
David van Eijl is opened the door of his new Faneijl Spirit Wear store on Friday to sell shirts, hats, scarves, blankets, golf towels and more with the PEM Bulldog logo. The store is located in the front part of his Texteijl printing business at 125 Second Ave. SE in Elgin.
The opening is the end result of months of renovation to the building.
“From the number of calls we’re getting about when we’re opening, I’m confident we’re going to have a busy shopping season over Christmas,” said van Eijl. “We’re very confident that demand will be high. There’s nowhere right now to get a Bulldog sweatshirt.”
Van Eijl bought out the previous source, Plainview’s SubZero Apparel & Design, in 2019.
He expects to hire some part-time employees to help staff the Spirit Wear store along with his team of seven print shop staff.
The PEM shop isn’t the only project that van Eijl has cooking. Building off the line of shirts he printed early in the pandemic to help support local restaurants, he will soon launch Eijl Give.
Eijl Give is a line of sweatshirts with a local non-profit organization emblazoned on the sleeves. That organization gets 50 percent of the sales of the shirts. The first one will raise funds for the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department.
