Paige Jehnke wants to help people in the Rochester area enjoy the outdoors by selling used equipment for camping, fishing, skiing, biking and more.
Playing off her name, she is opening a consignment shop called Janky Gear at 204 N. Broadway in the Queen City Center complex. The 1,500-square-foot store is in the back part of the center, although it is accessible through a Broadway-facing entrance near Hollandberry Pannekoeken.
The shop will carry all sorts of top name, used gear for outdoor activities.
"The goal is to get people outside inexpensively -- give people access to gear they might not be able to afford new,” said Jehnke. “Reuse culture is so cool, because the things are coming from locals and they're going to locals. And it's not in the back of a truck or on an airplane. It's not from an Amazon warehouse.”
She will start accepting equipment for consignment on Wednesday with a soft opening to follow later this week. Jehnke is also planning a grand opening event on Oct. 8.
Opening this shop is a change for Jehnke, who previously was working in marine engineering on ships. Being stuck onboard ships in Japan and elsewhere gave her a lot of time to work out her idea for the consignment store.
“Everyday I’d work a little bit more on the business plan. I’d wake up in the middle of the night and work on it. I think Rochester wants this, so I decided to go for it,” she said. “It really is nerve-wracking trying to open a business during a pandemic.”
