1946: Mayo Civic Auditorium ice can be rented for parties

Public ice skating for all ages was scheduled every Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. during the summer season.

  • Dean Rentmeester is the first Vietnam veteran to be commander at the Murphy-Johnson Post 94 of the American Legion at Rushford.
  • Mayo Civic Auditorium ice will be available for rent for private skating parties on weekends. Public ice skating for all ages is scheduled every Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. during the summer season.

1946 — 75 years ago

  • A boxing match between Willie Pep, world featherweight champion, and Jackie Graves, Austin, Minn., fighter, has been scheduled for July 25 in Minneapolis. (Pep would win the fight by TKO in round 8 of 10.)
  • The double feature at Rochester’s Time Theatre is “No Time for Comedy,” starring James Stewart, and “City for Conquest,” starring James Cagney.

1921 — 100 years ago

  • The man who robbed the Archie Moriel garage in Eyota was apprehended and will be given an indeterminate sentence to the reformatory in St. Cloud.
  • Yesterday was Dr. W. J. Mayo’s 60th birthday. Dr. Mayo was born June 29, 1861, in LeSueur, Minn. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1883, and immediately engaged in the practice of surgery in Rochester.
