  • Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon raised a record $49.1 million in pledges and contributions for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
  • Vice President Al Gore made a stop at the Minnesota State Fair. An estimated 10,000 people heard his remarks.

1971 — 50 years ago

  • The Green Bay Packers practiced the past two days at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD). Their regular training location at St. Norbert (Wisconsin) College was unavailable.
  • The Minnesota State High School League said 3,500 high school football games will be played in 1971, starting this Friday.
  • The cost of hot lunches will remain the same. The price, still in effect, is 25 cents for students through sixth grade, 35 cents for all other students, and 50 cents for adults.

1946 — 75 years ago

  • The first Norwegian chorus to visit the United States following Norway’s liberation will appear at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The 70-voice “Craftsmen’s Chorus” was organized in 1845.
  • Bud Abbott and Lou Costello will be in Minneapolis for a benefit performance at the Minneapolis Auditorium. Proceeds will go to the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation for underprivileged children in American cities.

1921 — 100 years ago

  • First National Bank is improving its burglar alarm to the extent that it will make it impossible to tamper with the vault after a particular hour.
  • Mayo Clinic and several other business firms operating under daylight saving time for the past few months will return to the standard time this Sunday at midnight.
  • The local Kiwanis club plans to have a restroom available during county fair week for the comfort of women and children.
