1991 – 25 years ago
• Gov. Arne Carlson was in Rochester today, visiting the Southeastern Minnesota Center for Independent Living. He also visited Schmidt Printing, stopped in Stewartville and at the Victory Café in Rushford.
• The first Riverland Technical College districtwide, in-service meeting was held this week on the Rochester campus. About 250 faculty and staff members attended the session.
1966 – 50 years ago
• Eighteen members of the Kasson Fire Department recently completed several summer sessions that emphasized fire-fighting methods and safety. Training was applied with the actual burning down of a small building in the final session.

• Miss Jolene Marie Braaten, a June graduate of Byron High School, won the first Miss Byron title. Miss Braaten will receive a $150 scholarship, a $100 wardrobe, her crown, jewelry and a trophy presented by the Byron Jaycees.
• Rochester dog catcher Robert Blakely had to catch a horse that jumped out of a truck near Northbrook Shopping Center. The horse was unhurt and has been retrieved by the owner.
1941 – 75 years ago
• Caddies at the Rochester Golf and Country Club were guests of the club at the annual luncheon for the group. More than 50 boys attended.
• A Stewartville farmer, after suffering a serious injury while plowing, was able to send his team of horses home with a note fastened to the bridle that he needed help. The family saw the horses come home and was able to get to the field to help. The farmer suffered a severe leg fracture when the draw pin broke while plowing.
1916 – 100 years ago
• Miss Mary Whiting has been selected as principal of the Rochester Junior High School. Miss Whiting first started teaching in 1882 at the Northrop school.

• A watch that has ticked off every minute of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War and the European War is owned by a family in Elgin. The watch originally was brought to the United States in 1735. The timepiece weighs 15 ounces and has been in the family for the past 10 generations.

One year ago:Visiting residents on tidy porch stoops and sampling the fried chicken at a corner restaurant, President Barack Obama held out the people of New Orleans as an extraordinary example of renewal and resilience 10 years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Ex-NBA star Darryl Dawkins, 58, whose board-shattering dunks earned him the moniker "Chocolate Thunder" and helped pave the way for breakaway rims, died in Allentown, Pa.
