Rochester Public Schools’ Relay for Life looks a little different this year.

Instead of a walk, the fundraisers will host an online basket auction May 3-9. Nearly 20 local businesses, including the Rochester Athletic Club, Sweet House Bakery, JETS Gymnastics and many local restaurants, donated items to be auctioned during the week, organizer Margaret Pieters said. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, which funds research and supports cancer patients during treatment.

The general public can access the auction at www.32auctions.com/RPSRelay beginning May 3.

Last year, in deference to COVID-19 protocols, RPS Relay for Life held a luminaria event during April, which raised about $3,000 for charity.

“We hope that this year's event will raise more money for the American Cancer Society than we did last year,” Pieters said. “More importantly, however, we hope that this event will bring the community together for the shared cause of fighting cancer, as well as support Rochester's local businesses after a difficult year. The generosity that these businesses showed towards our event was inspiring, and it has not been overlooked by those of us on the committee.”
