We may all march to the beat of our own drums, but one Rochester church wants people to drum together at least once next week.

Rochester’s First Presbyterian Church announced Wednesday it will host its first drum circle on Thursday, Aug. 12, on the church’s grounds at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Third Street Southwest in downtown. The drum circle will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and is open to all regardless of musical experience, instrument ownership, age or faith tradition.

"Rochester has a rich and diverse community," said First Presbyterian Church music director John Stender. "And our drum circle is intended as a fun and inclusive musical event where community members can share and support each others creative expression.”

Percussion instruments will be provided by the church although participants are encouraged to bring their own drum, pot, bucket, cowbell or other percussion instrument. Local percussionists Danny Solis and Zakh Peterson will help facilitate the drum circle.

Drum circle activities will include an interactive call-and-response, an imitation call-and-response, as well as an improvised jam to a unified beat.
