1995 – 25 years ago

The Virtual School, which will be a world wide web site on the internet, is being made possible through a $2 million grant from the Hiawatha Education Foundation. The Virtual School will connect 700 Winona families from their homes with their schools through a computer and dial-up access to the internet.

1970 – 50 years ago

Hubert H. Humphrey won the DFL endorsement for U.S. Senate as expected at the DFL convention in Duluth.

Vince Lombardi underwent exploratory surgery to discover the cause of severe abdominal pain. (Coach Lombardi would die from an aggressive form of colon cancer on Sept. 3, 1970, at the age of 57).

1945 – 75 years ago

Several Minnesota counties are raising the salaries of rural school teachers. The minimum salary for teachers in one-room schools this school year will be $150 a month.

Austin’s Jackie Graves next boxing match will be at the fairgrounds in Rochester on July 4th. Graves will tangle with Jorge Robles, sixth ranking bantamweight. Graves recently defeated Baby Gonzales in the Minneapolis Auditorium. (Graves, known as The Austin Atom, would win in a unanimous decision.

1920 – 100 years ago

The Door County cherries from the vicinity of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., will soon be on their way to southeast Minnesota.

The battery of Wigman and Watson held up for St. Charles as they beat the Witoka nine 9-3. Liskow of St. Charles made three running catches to assist in the baseball victory.
