Jason Owen, a senior-to-be at Stewartville High School, won two events at the USA Youth Track and Field Championships in Joplin, Mo. Owen won the 800-meter run and the 1,500-meter run.
1970 – 50 years ago
A storm, termed a miniature tornado, hit Lake City, uprooting trees and taking down some telephone and power lines. Power was lost for several hours.
Rod Carew, injured Minnesota Twins second baseman, was released from a hospital. Carew was hospitalized a week for knee surgery.
Trans World Airlines now has a no-smoking section aboard every airplane in its fleet. TWA is the first airline to establish a no-smoking section.

Hubert H. Humphrey was sworn in as mayor of Minneapolis today, highlighting a colorful ceremony marking the beginning of a two-year liberal-labor city administration.
Minnesota today has 294 known typhoid fever carriers registered with the state board of health.
Elmore Winslow, powerhouse fullback on the Chatfield football team last fall, has been chosen to play in the first-ever high school all-star football game to be played in the University of Minnesota stadium.

Forty quarts of good drinking liquor taken from area bootleggers were poured in the sewer by the order of Judge C. E. Callaghan.
Citizens are asked to be on the lookout as someone has been looting iceboxes that are located on back porches of homes. Report all thefts to the police.
Heavy rain the other night made it impossible to hold the scheduled barn dance at James Deveny’s new barn. It will be this evening – bring your dancing shoes.
