1995 – 25 years ago

It appears Twins rookie left fielder Marty Cordova will have a shot at the 1995 American League Rookie of the Year. (Cordova would win the award).

Mayo Clinic is negotiating with a hospital in Menomonie, Wis., to bring the facility into a network that the Rochester-based clinic has been building across southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

1970 – 50 years ago

Eight young Minnesota men were arrested by the FBI for break-ins in draft board offices in Alexandria, Little Falls, and Winona. Draft records have also been stolen from the Wabasha draft board offices.

Sixteen outstanding high school seniors have been named recipients of Hamline University presidential scholarships for the next school year. One of the recipients was Scott Burns of Grand Meadow.

1945 – 75 years ago

The board of St. Louis County has set up a fund to pay bounties for killing bears at a rate of $20 per adult. The marauding bears have been preying on poultry and livestock in the Duluth area.

The Minnesota farmers will need between 25,000 and 30,000 additional workers to help harvest his year’s crop but manpower officials are certain that cooperation from city folks will make it possible to bring in the crop without loss.

1920 – 100 years ago

Larger acreage of corn than has ever been planted in Minnesota, a total of 3,067,000, or a 4 percent increase from 1919. (In 2019 7,800,000 acres of corn was planted).

A high school superintendent’s salary has continued to increase from an average of $1,000 per year in 1873 to $8,000 a year in 1920.
