  • The U.S. Postal Service is unveiling more than 100 stamps next week, and a Paul Bunyan stamp will debut Nov. 9 in Bemidji. The stamp will be available to the public in 1996.
  • Rochester’s Somali community will be the focus of a program at the Open Table coffeehouse. It will be the third in a series highlighting the city’s ethnic diversity.

1970 — 50 years ago

  • In recognition of American Education Week, the Elgin American Legion Auxiliary entertained Elgin and Millville teachers with coffee and a program at the post clubrooms.
  • Minnesota voting hours will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. DFL gubernatorial candidate Wendell Anderson and his running mate, Rudy Perpich, along with GOP opponents Douglas Head and Ben Boo, are making final campaign stops.

1945 — 75 years ago

  • Two hundred and twenty-seven head of cattle were shipped from Lewiston to Poland. The cattle, shipped by livestock dealer E. E. Gremelsbach, were purchased by a United Nations Relief organization.
  • St. Charles High School placed four players on the annual Republican-Herald Whitewater all-conference team. They are Robert Anderson, Newton Eckles, Leigh Bell and James Potter.

1920 — 100 years ago

  • The city cast a record election vote, and the polling places were swamped by the surge of men and women. Some voters were waiting hours to cast their ballots. Counting the votes is expected to take twice as long due to the addition of women voters without increasing the number of election judges.
