The annual Festival of Trees opened at the Mayo Civic Center Auditorium with 84 trees dressed in holiday art. Festival volunteers hope to raise $84,000 for Hiawatha Homes.
Single parents who need help with assembling bicycles, swings or any Christmas toy may bring them to Clements Chevrolet for free assembly.
1970 – 50 years ago
Chalmer Pederson was selected Scoutmaster for the Rushford Boy Scout troop. His troop assistant will be Larry Sass.
Rochester State Junior College’s basketball team will open its season, and according to Coach Wayne Peterson, it is a new era. This will be the first season playing at Rockenbach Hall, the new RSJC gymnasium. (The team opened the season with a 61-59 win over Pillsbury Bible College in Owatonna.)
1945 – 75 years ago
Major and Mrs. Fred Hargesheimer and Lt. Robert Hargesheimer, Rochester, were Sunday guests at the Francis Kramer home.
The Plainview American Legion Auxiliary voted to send a donation to the Rochester State Hospital to assist with costs of a Christmas party to be given to veterans there.
1920 – 100 years ago
After a foot chase through the stockyard district in Rochester, three 12-year-old boys were arrested for stealing chickens. The boys had to call their parents.
Two local men left today for the north woods, where they will secure two railroad carloads of Christmas trees to be placed for sale. The men said the trees would be reasonably priced so all can afford a “good old-fashioned Christmas.”
