More than 500 items will be up for bids at the Rochester Art Center Whole Earth Auction being held at the Kahler Hotel. This is the 25th anniversary of the auction and the 50th anniversary of the Art Center.
The Minnesota State High School League’s board of directors approved a four-class basketball tournament. The new tournament format will begin in 1997, and the schools will be divided by enrollment into Class 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A.

Goaltenders for Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Mayo were both named to the 1970-71 Southern Minnesota Hockey League All-Conference team by league coaches. JM’s Clark Powell and Mayo’s Dennis Langevin were both cited for excellent play this season.
Wren Combs, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. J. Combs of Rochester is the new Rochester Junior Miss. She will go on to the state Junior Miss Pageant.

An amplification system to assist those who have difficulty hearing has been installed in the First Methodist Church in Rochester.
In observance of the 214th birthday of George Washington, Rochester schools and various public offices will be closed.
1921 – 100 years ago
The Model Clothing Store of West Concord was robbed last night of $1,000 in merchandise and $15 in cash. At this point, there are no clues to the robber's identity or whereabouts.
The village of Minneiska, located on the Milwaukee Road, 20 miles west of Winona, was the scene of a fire. The fire started in the blacksmith shop and spread to other buildings before the Winona Volunteer Fire Department arrived and brought the blaze under control.
