  • Many people woke up to no power after the second ice storm in a week. It could be weeks before power is restored in some parts of southwestern Minnesota.
  • A first-grader teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in Rochester, Carol Lucido was recently named 1996 Teacher of the Year by Arc Minnesota.

  • The prevailing opinion about public officials and politicians is that although some mean well, unselfish people in high office are a rare breed. Trust in politicians has diminished in this country in recent years.
  • For the first time in its 111-year history, the Minnesota State Fair has been scheduled to run for 11 days next year. The added date will give more school children a chance to attend the fair before classes start. (The State Fair now runs 12 days, including and ending on Labor Day).

1921 — 100 years ago

  • Dr. A. F. Kilbourne has returned from Faribault, Minn., where he was called as an expert witness in a murder case. Dr. Kilbourne is an expert in insanity, and it was in this capacity that he was summoned. (Dr. Kilbourne was superintendent of the Rochester State Hospital at the time.)
  • A public hearing was held in Rochester regarding a possible increase in telephone rates. The hearing room was packed with Rochester citizens who were opposed to the rate increase.
