An at-home edition of the Rochester Public Library's Summer Playlist is being launched.

Summer Playlist, the annual all-ages program designed to encourage reading and other activities, has been reshaped a new twist because the library is closed and community activities have been canceled because of COVID-19 concerns

“Instead of tracking activities through the summer to earn rewards at the end of the program, we’re providing families with everything they need to complete playlist activities,” said Karen Lemke, the library's head of marketing and community engagement.

Starting Wednesday, anyone who visits the Rochester Public Library's curbside service or bookmobile can pick up a Summer Playlist bag, which includes an activity log and sidewalk chalk. Participants are invited to use the chalk to join in “create” and “care” activities.

“We’d love to see every sidewalk in Rochester full of messages of care, support, and kindness,” Lemke said

In addition to creating and caring, the Summer Playlist also promotes activities like reading, growing, and playing.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, the library is hosting a special “Grab-n-Go Summer Playlist Kickoff Event” at Dr. Martin Luther King Park, 1738 E. Center St. Families are welcome to visit a table outside of the Bookmobile to pick up a Summer Playlist: At Home Edition activity log and prize bag.

Summer Playlist: At Home Edition is free and open to all ages. For more information, go to www.rplmn.org/playlist.
