Rochester is sending gifts to its sister cities around the world.
Mayor Kim Norton unveiled Peace Dove sculptures Thursday, May 13, at the Gagnon Museum, 2500 Fourth St. SW.
These small sculptures will be given to Rochester's sister cities as a symbol of peace and a representation of Rochester. According to Minnesota Employment and Economic Development, Rochester has sister city relationships with five cities:
- Moosburg, Germany.
- Xianyang , Shaanxi, China.
- Shiheung City, South Korea.
- Kathmandu, Nepal.
- Akita, Japan.
In 1988, the City of Rochester commissioned Charles E. Gagnon to create the Peace Fountain.
The Peace Fountain was dedicated on June 25, 1989, at the end of the RochesterFest celebrations. It is one of the centerpieces of Peace Plaza on First Avenue and First Street Southwest.
The sculpture is also situated near the Mayo Clinic with the intention of those undergoing medical treatments can come and relax in their search for healing and peace.
