He took down Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle.

So, yeah, with an $80-million opening weekend for the popular pineapple-dwelling TV parazoan I would definitely say this sequel was sponge-worthy.

A Nickelodeon fixture since 1999, SpongeBob SquarePantsand Bikini Bottom'sother prominent citizens mark their second big screen appearance in "Sponge Out of Water"(2004's "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"absorbed $140 million).

While I'm a diehard fan of Charlie the Tunaand an admirer of Katy Perry's left shark(who isn't?), I've never cared for the juvenile antics of Bob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Sandy and Squidward, who're all here. It's got nothing to do with any aversion to aquatic humor, per se. I just don't think it works on multiple levels like many of the Pixar or DreamWorks films, so at $7.25 I feel like I was "soaked" (insert irritating SpongeBob laugh here). But among the young moviegoers with whom I screened this one, it was a definite crowd-pleaser, even if the plot is dark.

It's the end of days when Plankton cons his way into the safe at the Krusty Krab and absconds with the formula for the Krabby Patty. Or does he? Up top, a live-action unrecognizable Antonio Banderasas Burger-Beard is rewriting the story on the fly such that he and his newly-converted food truck now dispense the delicacy. (I don't know about you, but I can't get the image of Judge Reinholdin his Captain Hook Fish and Chips getup from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"out of my head; but I digress.)

In what I can only describe as some kind of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"homage (or perversion) a dolphin named Bubbles, the overseer of the galaxy, intervenes. Some albums you have to play backwards to understand. For this, I think you have to be tweaking on Pixy Stix.

After you wring out all of the silly gags (full disclosure: I did chuckle out loud at the waffle chasing the bottle of syrup inside of SpongeBob's brain) you're left with a forced moral about teamworkin what amounts to merely an extended episode of the show.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. "Sponge Out of Water" is an entertaining tale but only for a limited demographic.
