Freedom Yang has been a Rochester resident for just over a decade.

“It’s amazing to be a part of a community that has evolved greatly in my time here,” he said. “I’ve really gotten to enjoy Rochester and the opportunities it has given me.”

Freedom works at Sephora in Apache Mall. He's a big proponent of artistry, and says creativity is something to be celebrated and embraced.

“Beauty and fashion are meant for all, and working as a beauty adviser is a great platform to be able to share that,” he said.

Words that best describe your style?

Chic, bold, confident, black.

What items in your closet have you been reaching for most often lately?

Boots and booties. Vest and blazers are favorites, as well; I have broad shoulders, and they really help to cut the look of my body down and make it appear slimmer.

How does your job at Sephora impact your daily outfit selection?

Sephora’s dress code is black, and the majority of what I own is black, so I just pick clothing to accent my style along with my work uniform.

Favorite colors?

Black all the way — it’s slimming and easy to manage, and can be dressed up or down. White is a great contrast against all colors, and I also love anything that’s khaki green or maroon.

How does hair and/or makeup play a role in your style?

Because the majority of my clothing is black, my makeup can either emphasize it or lean neutral. I love bold color once in a while!

Whose style do you admire, and why?

Patrick Starrr. His style is simply just him — fearless and bold, with no space for the opinions of others.

Thoughts on Rochester's style scene?

It has evolved a lot more than I could have ever imagined it to in the past few years. It’s refreshing to see people be more open and express themselves how they want.

What do you consider a splurge-worthy item?

SHOES!!! All of mine are what I would consider my best purchases.

So what are your go-to pair of kicks?

A good pair of heels.

Most sentimental item you own?

My cultural Hmong vest given as a gift from my mom.

You can only keep five clothing items, what do you choose?

Black leggings, black basic T-shirt, black blazer, white sneakers, black hat. A versatile selection that is easy to both dress up or down.

What are the items you think every well-dressed person should have in their wardrobe?

A leather jacket.

Parting thoughts?

Fashion shouldn’t be feared or questioned. There are no rules — it should be expressive, bold and daring, and ultimately, an extension of you.
