Harland O. Olson - Rochester

A memorial service for Harland O. Olson will be held at Elmo Lutheran Church in rural Parkers Prairie, Minn., on April 30, 2011, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Jonathan Sorum officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Elmo Cemetery in rural Parkers Prairie.

Mr. Olson, 90, of Rochester, died Feb. 20, 2011, at Charter House.

Harland Oscar Olson was born March 27, 1920, in Parkers Prairie. He graduated from Parkers Prairie High School and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, graduating with majors in Mathematics and Physical Education. He did his master's degree work at the University of Minnesota. He coached football and taught high school mathematics and was with the Minneapolis Public School System for 30 years. On April 2, 1944, he married Gladys Lorraine Dalsgaard in Springfield, Minn. In 1955 they moved to Roseville and lived there until retiring to Mesa, Ariz., in 1980. They moved to Charter House in 1994.

Mr. Olson was well known for his coaching abilities having been honored for his 1945 Chatfield team outscoring their opponents 254-0. In addition to coaching, his interests included golfing, playing bridge and music. He was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church and served on the Charter House Residents Council and Dining Services Committee.

Harland is survived by a sister-in-law, Sylvia Olson of Parkers Prairie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and three brothers.
