SPRING VALLEY — Funeral services for Harold E. Brandt will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev Laura Fladten officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Friday Feb. 18, 2011, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Harold Elmer Brandt, 83, of Spring Valley died Wednesday Feb. 16, 2011, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. The family appreciates the tender loving care and the peaceful surroundings of Seasons Hospice.
He was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Spring Valley, to Arnold and Laura (Buss) Brandt. He attended school through the eighth grade, and joined the United States Army Air Corps in November of 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and served until February of 1947, being discharged at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Harold was united in marriage to Fern Hotopp on Oct. 14, 1950, in Spring Valley, and to this union five children were born; Sandra, Sharon, Patricia, Marvin and Lisa. Harold worked in trucking all of his life and truly enjoyed his job. Many knew him as "Jiggs". His witty sense of humor was one of his most endearing traits.
He loved his family, visiting, playing cards, his cup of coffee, and the people of Spring Valley. He was famous for his pumpkin pie at family gatherings.
He is survived by his children, Sandra (Bruce) Bauer of Winona, Sharon (Donald) Maiden of Austin, Patricia (Kevin) McGill of Spring Valley, Marvin (Lynne) Brandt of Rochester, and Lisa (Matt) Mencke of Lakeville, 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother Gerald (Miriam) Brandt of Holland, Iowa; and two sister-in-laws, Ann Brandt of Grand Meadow and Marlys Brandt of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fern in March of 1993, one sister Arnelda and two brothers, Loren and Lloyd.
