Helen E. Benson - Cannon Falls

Helen E. Benson, 98, of Cannon Falls, died on Monday evening, Oct. 24, 2011, at the Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings.

Helen was born on Nov. 10, 1912, in Belvidere, the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Korsten) Meyer. Helen graduated from Red Wing High School from 1931. After one year of teachers training she taught in rural school for five years. She married Lloyd Benson on June 12, 1937, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed together for 10 years. Helen later worked at Armour meat packing plant in South Saint Paul until her retirement in 1977. In 1995, she moved into the Park Street High Rise. While living there she wrote a weekly news article for the Cannon Falls Beacon entitled "Park Street News," reporting on life at the Park Street apartments. Every week her children would wonder what she would write about them this week.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and playing cards. Helen liked writing letters which she considered a lost art. She loved spending time with all of her family, especially at the cabin in Stone Lake, Wis.

She is survived by her sons, Dave (Jean) of Stone Lake, Wis., and Bob (Pat) of Rochester; daughter, Carol (Mike) Gorman of Eden Prairie; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; two sisters and five brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle Street, Cannon Falls. Pastor Phillip Ruud will officiate.
