Jerry and Sandy Onkels
Jerry and Sandy Onkels were married 50 years ago, in November 1964, at Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel in Oakland, California. They have two sons, Mike and Dave, along with four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The couple met in a chance encounter outside a church singles meeting in Oakland, where Jerry spotted Sandy wearing a memorable green dress. Jerry proposed nearly a year later, while standing in front of his red Volkswagen Beetle, and the couple was married in a small ceremony, at the same chapel where they met, in 1964.
Jerry and Sandy say their secret to a successful marriage has been hard work and determination €" along with the occasional dash of romance. Jerry has been opening the car door for Sandy for more than five decades, a gesture he continues to this day.
