A Mass of Christian burial for Joan E. Gunderson, 74, of Stewartville, will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Matt Fasnacht officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Gunderson died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, following a lengthy illness, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester where she had been a resident for a day.

Joan Elaine Bertman was born Oct. 4, 1936, in Marshall, Mo., to Loyola and Helen (Colleen) Bertman. She moved with her family as a young child to Rochester where she grew up and graduated from Lourdes High School in 1955. Joan was married on July 3, 1958, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Rochester to Larry R. Gunderson. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Rochester before moving to Stewartville in 1964, where they raised their family and have continued to make their home. Mrs. Gunderson was employed as a nursing assistant at the Stewartville Care Center for 22 years until her retirement. Mr. Gunderson was employed at Associated Milk Producers Inc. in Rochester for 42 years until his retirement.

Mrs. Gunderson was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and enjoyed being a homemaker and the mother of her seven children and especially enjoyed time spent with all her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Larry; five daughters and two sons, Liz (Jeff) Podein of Stewartville, Tony (Jackie) of Stewartville, Debbie (Randy) Morrow of Rochester, Jill (James) Swenson of Taopi, Minn., Sandy (Scott) Hamand of Spring Valley, Tami (Brian) Robertson of San Diego,Calif., and Jake (Courtney) of Stewartville; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Doris.

Friends may call from 5  p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2011, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning.
