AUSTIN — Joyce (Shugart) Elgan, 81, of Austin, died at her home on Friday.
Joyce was born on Nov. 20, 1929, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Dr. Maxwell and Mildred (Hubbard) Wilson. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in January of 1948, and from Iowa State University in 1952.
In 1953, Joyce married John "Joe" Shugart Jr. in Waterloo and they lived in Austin, where they raised their two children. Joe died in 1997. Joyce married Robert Elgan on June 7, 2003.
Joyce was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and P.E.O. Chapter A.Q.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Robert Elgan, Austin; children, Sydney (Todd) Taggart, Edina and Jeffrey (Jean) Shugart, Johnston, Iowa; step-children, Mike Elgan, Ft. Worth, Texas, and Cynthia Jo Elgan, Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Corey and Tyler Shugart, Alex and Abby Taggart, Lauren (Andrew) Vangomple, Nate, Zach and Jill Swoyer; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Ian) Studinski, Sean (Cynthia) Elgan, and Brandi (Greg) Daniel; brother and sisters-in-law, Gordon (Maria) Wilson, Waterloo, Iowa, Janet (Mrs. David) Shugart, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Margaret Warren, Omaha, Neb., and Mary (Jerry) Anderson, Omaha, Neb.; brother-in-law, Phillip Shugart, Bellevue, Neb.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joe Shugart, brother-in-law David Shugart, and sister-in-law Marion Shugart.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Diana Rogers officiating. Organist will be Scott Blankenbaker. Soloist will be Erin Schumacher. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin. There will be no reviewal. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
Casket bearers will be Corey Shugart, Tyler Shugart, Alex Taggart, Abby Taggart, Lauren Vangomple and Jill Swoyer.
Memorials are preferred to Christ Episcopal Church, the Hormel Institute, for cancer research, or Austin Medical Center Hospice.
