Laura Butterbrodt is the health reporter for the Duluth News Tribune, where she has worked since January 2021. She also covered business until June 2022.

She has a bachelor of arts in journalism from South Dakota State University. Laura grew up in rural southwest Minnesota and lived and worked in Watertown, South Dakota, before moving to the Twin Ports. She has worked in journalism since 2014. Laura was a 2018 fellow for the Bakala Foundation's Journey: Journalism Boot Camp in Prague, Czech Republic and has also done reporting for the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Joseph Zak disappeared from his group home in Brookston, Minnesota, on Dec. 7, 2015. Investigators feel that a cellphone ping may have misled the investigation from searching the grounds near where he went missing until it was too late. His case, which remains unsolved, has had no developments since spring 2016.
In Duluth, St. Luke's and Essentia shared the news late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Nurses with the Minnesota Nurses Association have rescinded their strike notices at the hospitals.
The strike will begin Dec. 11, unless tentative contract agreements are made with hospitals before then. Nurses at Essentia and Twin Cities hospitals would strike for three weeks, until Dec. 31.
The 15,000 union nurses at 15 hospitals in Minnesota and Wisconsin will vote Nov. 30. The vote could give MNA leaders the power to authorize another strike, following a three-day strike held in September, as they bargain for contracts.

The Minnesota Nurses Association, which announced plans for 15,000 nurses to strike for three days starting Sept. 12, said Thursday they still plan to hold their strike, despite the charges.
The strike, which includes 15,000 nurses across 16 hospitals in the Twin Cities, Twin Ports and Moose Lake, will begin Sept. 12.
