In March, Mayo Clinic earned a top score of 100 from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Mayo Clinic was one of four providers in Minnesota designated "leaders" in establishing practices that include LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

"This is exciting and a great achievement. It reflects the dedication of our colleagues who play vital roles in fostering change throughout Mayo Clinic and the continued support of Mayo’s leadership," said Sharonne Hayes, M.D., the medical director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in Rochester, in a news release.

The HRC Equality Index scores health care providers in categories like patient and employee non-discrimination, training in LGBTQ+-centered care, and employee benefits.

The Rochester campus received a perfect score in every evaluated category in 2018, up from a score of 85 in 2017.

The Mayo Clinic campus in Arizona received a score of 75 in 2018, down from 90 in 2017. The Jacksonville hospital also received a score of 75, down from 85 in 2017.

According to the press release, both campuses received lower scores in 2018 because they did not take steps to make progress and meet increasingly higher scoring criteria.

According to the press release, Mayo Clinic Rochester plans to maintain its score of 100 by taking the following steps over the next year.

1. Create and launch an external website that covers LGBTQ policies, procedures, practices, information and services.

2. Boost recruitment efforts for prospective patients and staff through collaborations with groups that serve LGBTQ populations.

3. Standardize policies, including language used across sites.

4. Engage with patients to improve satisfaction.
