Jones, a Minneapolis and Chicago band led by singer Clay Hagen, will play Friday night at Kathy's Pub.

A potent mash of electrified Delta blues and rock n' roll kicks off this weekend at Kathy's Pub.

Minneapolis- and Chicago-based Jonesbrings its ripping blend to the stage around 10 p.m. Friday. The band's website, jonesrock.com , has just under two minutes' worth of music to check out, but it's enough time to feel the edges of the maelstrom of energy created by the band and capped off by the lead singer Clay Hagen'simpressive vocal work.

Iowa City bluegrass purveyors Flash in a Panare scheduled for a Fridayevening set at Kinney Creek Brewery's Taproomfrom 7 to 10. Their latest album, "Antidote to Sell" is streaming for free on the group's Bandcamp page, flashinapan.bandcamp.com . It includes cuts like the paranoid-around-the-edges "Trackin' Me," and the melodic, chaotically-percussed "On the Run."

Gel is currently celebrating its 14th year of being a band, and over those years the band has honed its performance instincts to a sharpened point. Their song list, available for perusal at gelcentral.com , includes '90s essentials like Bush's "Machinehead," Blur's "Song #2," and later cuts like Jimmy Eat World's "In the Middle." They also have "Uptown Funk"in their arsenal, but it's not like anyone is still jamming to that, right?

On Saturdaynight, Kathy's welcomes the Cedar County Cobras. The band has dubbed its sound "gravel road rock 'n' roll," and, based on the photos on their Facebook page, facebook.com/CedarCountyCobras , they accentuate their sound with full-brimmed hats and a battery's worth of energy.
