Carillon concert set

Music of the Big Band era is usually played by, well, big bands. That won't be the case when Laura Ellis performs Sunday on the Rochester Carillon, atop Mayo Clinic's Plummer Building.

Ellis, an associate professor of music at the University of Florida, will perform music of the giants of  the Big Band era, including Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and singers Helen O'Connell, Doris Day, the Mills Brothers and Rosemary Clooney. "Published carillon arrangements for music of this era are rarely available," Ellis said in program notes she prepared for the concert.

Ellis is a Minnesota native and graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and earned her graduate degrees from the University of Kansas. She performs regularly on the Century Tower carillon at the University of Florida.

Sunday's concert is at 4 p.m. and will be heard throughout the downtown area. A reception for Ellis will be held at the Great Doors of the Plummer Building following the concert.
