Laugh out loud and raise funds for lupus

In sort of a marriage between her professional life as an autoimmune disease researcher at Mayo Clinic and her personal life as a stand-up comedienne, Rochester's Shannon Kellyhas teamed up with Friends of Lupus Research for a first-ever fundraiser in Rochester.

"Science and comedy are complementary career pursuits," Kelly says. "Both involve background research, keen observation, writing and delivering a message that relates to others."

The Laughs for Lupuscomedy show fundraiser seeks to do just that, and will feature Kelly as emcee and opening performer, as well as comedians Michael Callahan and John Bush. The event is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Goonie's Comedy Club, 7 Second St. S.W.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota, which funds lupus research at Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. Organizers of the event hope it will also help raise awareness of what lupus is.

"The main message is that even though people with lupus look healthy, they experience daily pain," Kelly says, adding that that's the reason some people refer to lupus as a "silent disease."

Male call

Savvy Singles of Rochester is calling all single males to its annual speed-dating event later this month. So far, there are 80 confirmed speed-daters, with 30 single women still on the waiting list. More male daters are needed to even out the ratio.

How does speed-dating work? A group of men are matched with a group of women in a similar age range. Each "couple" gets about five minutes to chat one-on-one before moving on to the next. At the end of the evening, if someone is interested in you, you will receive his/her contact info. Then it's up to you if you choose to contact that person afterward.

The Savvy Singles group was formed in February 2006 to allow professional singles to meet, mingle and maybe fall in love.

Registration deadline is Wednesday. Cost is $25. To sign up, send e-mail to jtopness@charter.net; be sure to include your name, age, occupation, phone number and e-mail address.

The event will be held Sept. 17 at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester.

Take a break with a Drank

Feeling stressed out or need to unwind from the daily grind? Chill out with a Drank

Now through Labor Day, you can "slow your roll" for just 25 cents at all Andy's Liquor locations in Rochester.

Though it tastes like a grape-flavored Red Bull, this non-alcoholic beverage is actually an anti-energy drink. Billed as "an extreme relaxation beverage," Drank is infused with what producers describe as a safe level of melatonin — a naturally produced hormone that induces sleepiness — as well as other "calming" ingredients such as valerian root and rose hips.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
