RCT celebrates start of 60th season

Rochester Civic Theatre kicked off its 60th anniversary season Wednesday with a night of music, food and art  — and a request for donations.

The occasion was the regular weekly Wednesday night artists happy hour that RCT has been hosting this summer on the outdoor patio.

As part of the anniversary year, RCT is seeking $60 donations from patrons and friends, said Gregory Stavrou, executive director. "We think this is very much in keeping with the spirit of a community theater," he said.

Stavrou ran down the list of activities and programs sponsored by RCT in addition to the mainstage theatrical productions. Education and outreach have long been part of the RCT mission, but an extended slate of musical and other artistic offerings are now part of the theater's schedule.

"We are committed to doing what this community likes, what this community needs," Stavrou said. "And we want to challenge ourselves and the community artistically."

Wednesday's event included music by the duo of Brandon Sampson and John Wheeler, as well as the trio of Kevin Kleist, Dianna Parks and Bob Sanborn. An open microphone session was also held. There were children's art activities and a photo booth.

The 60th season opens Sept. 9 with the comedy "Dearly Departed."
