Congress has renewed the COMPETES Reauthorization Act, which sets funding guidelines to increase federal support for science education and basic research, including studies of cutting-edge energy technologies.
The effort is aimed at boosting the nation’s economic competitiveness, according to the National Academies .
The news organization HPC (high performance computing) Wire reports that the legislation will increase investment in science education, advanced research, and manufacturing innovation and says that the legislation includesmoney for high-tech research at universities, cash prizes for solving "crucial scientific problems" and improved industry access to supercomputers to spur innovation.
