Once you have your place settings down, it’s time to think about creating a centerpiece. Brianna Truax, interior designer and the florist behind Fox & Fern in Rochester, Minn ., shares her thoughts on creating your own holiday centerpiece.
"Start with the foundation, which is your vase," she begins. She is quick to point out that you aren’t limited to vases you’ve gotten with flower arrangements. "You can use pumpkins or baskets or anything like that."
If you use an unconventional vase such as a squash or pumpkin, make sure you put a watertight container inside for your flowers.
When deciding what to fill the vase with, think beyond fresh blooms. "I pull from the outdoors a lot," says Truax. "Fall and winter are fantastic for textures: spruce, sticks, acorns, all of those kinds of things."
To spice things up a bit, grab a can of spray paint. "Spray paint some sticks gold, spray paint acorns gold. Gold is the hot metallic for this year," says Truax. "I spray paint anything."

Truax also gravitates towards adding herbs in her arrangements, along with fruit and vegetables, which are also fair game to spray paint.
You can use many natural elements and supplement with flowers, or vice versa. You’re only limited by your own imagination.
If your imagination feels stuck or you simply don’t have the time, Truax says just go to a florist. They can take your ideas and create a centerpiece you’ll be proud of.
