Assisi program addresses caregiver fatigue

"Who Helps the Helper?" is the title of a two-day program, Nov. 14-15 at Assisi Heights in Rochester.

The program runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 14, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15. Cost is $150 per person, which includes breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

With the demands and changes in healthcare, the pressures and stresses upon providers at all levels is increasing dramatically. This places providers at risk for burnout or compassion fatigue, which has an impact on providing quality and ethical care to patients.

Compassion fatigue is a normal response to working in fields that demand a high degree of compassion and care for others. It is the experience of deep, chronic, emotional, spiritual and physical exhaustion that has a profound and harmful impact on the caregiver's sense of hope, as well as their feeling that their work has value. It can also have a serious impact on one's personal, family and social life.

The workshop will help participants identify warning signs and develop effective skills to maintain a sense of health, well-being, joy and energy in all aspects of their lives.

Thomas Roberts, LCSW, LMFT, is a licensed psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist. He has worked in a variety of settings, from inpatient addiction treatment to his current private practice where he specializes in mindfulness and mind-body healing.
