A local business owner is bringing the holidays straight to homes.
On Friday, Ashley Moberg unloaded five bins of decoration items from the back of her Real Deals on Wheels trailer.
Since opening Real Deals in Rochester, women have asked Moberg to decorate their homes for them, she said. Before this fall, she didn’t have the means or time — but with fewer clients visiting the store, why not bring the products to them?
Moberg charges an hourly rate, plus whatever a client’s decoration budget is. She hasn’t set a minimum budget, but assumes her clients “don’t just want me to hang a shelf.”
She receives pictures and space measurements by phone, and asks clients to set a budget and describe the style they like.
Shelly Paulson, her first client Friday, asked for a modern farm look — “distressed and rustic, but clean lines.” She also asked Moberg to add holiday touches to her downstairs — a request Moberg will see more often as Rochester gears up for Christmas.
It was an easy lead-in, Moberg said — Paulson is a longtime Real Deals customer, so she already knew her style.
Paulson often brought in pictures of empty walls and her fireplace for decorating advice, the home day care owner said.
Before meeting Moberg, Paulson said her home was a little minimalistic, as she’d had trouble deciding how to ornament her space.
“Sometimes it’s overwhelming,” she said.
On Friday, Moberg added decorations to Paulson’s downstairs den, which contained little furniture — she pulled out clocks, wall hangings, wreaths (five of them to decide between), and holiday items from those bins.
“She’s lived there for a long time and just never goes down there because there’s no decor, it’s not a warm space,” Moberg said. “You should be able to enjoy all the spaces in your home.”
The entire job took about an hour, Moberg said.
“I thought that it went great,” she said. “She ended up liking all of it, for the most part.”
Moberg hadn’t spent much time marketing her decoration services in the week prior, but said she had four or five clients lined up in the future months. Some have expressed interest in Christmas decorations and trimming trees, while others are looking for room makeovers.
“I hope it’s something ladies continue to utilize, especially ladies who don’t like to decorate or don’t know how, but want their houses to look a certain way,” Moberg said.
