CURRIE, Minn. — Currie is known as the Gateway to Lake Shetek, southwestern Minnesota's largest lake and the headwaters of the Des Moines River.
In this small town of just more than 200 residents, Matt and Elizabeth Schreier own a restaurant that blends in with the town's picturesque lake and history.
Matt Schreier took all that into account when he chose the name Lakeside Hideaway for the restaurant he opened in 2010.
"Lake Shetek is the biggest draw for this area," he said. "And there are times when people need to just have a place for private, intimate dining. After a time of brainstorming, Lakeside Hideaway combined both and seemed to be the right name."
He redid the interior of the building that was constructed in 1884. It had been a mercantile, a grocery store and more recently a restaurant. During the 1920s the community theater was located upstairs.

The emphasis now is on fine dining in a relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere. Pictures of the lake from a local artist decorate the walls. Four fish aquariums, one nursery aquarium and other lake decor are highlights.
"Our beef steaks are certified premium," said Schreier. "Many folks brag on our hickory smoked beef briskets and ribs. They are smoked in-house."
Walleye and shrimp tacos features fried walleye, tequila-lime marinated grilled shrimp, tartar and shredded lettuce.
Sides include garlic-mashed potatoes, French fries, baked potatoes, steak fries, sweet potato fried, mini-hash browns, coleslaw, baked beans, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables.
In season, vegetables are harvested from the Schreiers' garden on Matt's grandfather's farm.
"We both grew up in families that put an emphasis on gardening," said Elizabeth Schreier. "It tastes better, and it is important to us to do things locally as much as possible."
Green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, beets, onions and peas are nearing harvest size. The garden leeks are a great start to their potato leek soup. Tomatoes are used fresh or frozen for use all winter in soups and pastas.
During the week, Lakeside Hideaway offers a Perfect Portions Menu. The entrees are a bit smaller but still come with a soup or house salad, choice of one side, vegetable and bread stick.
