Rochester photographer Dean Riggott, a city native, is bringing his well-liked book of local photographs back into the picture.

He recently had 4,000 fresh copies of "Rochester, Minnesota: A Visual and Historic Journey" printed.

"It's actually been out of print for four years," Riggott said. "I just didn't have the money to reprint it."

First published in 2003, the book has sold about 15,000 copies, Riggott said. The new edition contains seven new images that weren't in that first edition. He plans a full-scale revamp of the book's contents in the next edition, probably within the next two years.

"I'll update history, because there's nothing in there since about 2004," he said. "My plan is to probably add about 20 new images."

His book sells well to Rochester visitors, realtors and city promoters who make gifts of it, and residents who like to see sides of their city they may be unfamiliar with.

The 2003 book replaced an earlier volume, "Rochester: The Images," which Riggott published in 1997.

"A lot of people have the first book but don't have this book, and this is a much nicer book," he said. "The photos are larger …there's about 40 new photos, there's an entire history section that wasn't in the first book."

The book features 79 of Riggott's photos, a foreword by fellow Rochester native Dr. Paul Scanlon, and text by Mike Dougherty, a Post-Bulletin editor.

Riggott was a Post-Bulletin photographer from 1991 to 2000, when he left the newspaper to start Dean Riggott Photography, a corporate, communications and editorial photo business, and Riggott Studios, which shoots wedding portraits. He also is the author of "Life on the Farm: A Pictorial Journey of Minnesota's Farmland and its People," published in 2001.
