Longest Day bridge event is Sunday

On Sunday, the Rochester Duplicate Bridge Club and other bridge clubs around the country will take part in the Alzheimer's Association's The Longest Day to raise funds for Alzheimer's research.

The event is held on June 21, the summer solstice and longest day of the year, to symbolize the challenging journey of Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers. The Rochester club will play bridge from sunrise to sunset, with a goal of raising $1,600, according to Sue Greenberg, team captain.

In the past two years of The Longest Day, more than 160 bridge clubs nationwide have raised $1 million for the Alzheimer's Association. This year, the American Contract Bridge League wants to raise an additional $600,000.

The bridge league points out that playing a game like bridge provides mental and social benefits that can result in improved brain health. The average age of members of the American Contract Bridge League is 69.
