Magazine: Noseworthy 16th most influential in healthcare
Modern Healthcare magazine lists Dr. John Noseworthy, president and chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic, as one of the 100 most influential people in healthcare .
It is the 13th annual publication of the list, which Modern Healthcare put together after receiving more than 15,000 nomination submissions this year. A story announcing the ranking was posted on the magazine's website Saturday.
Noseworthy, who has been included in the list for four years now, is ranked at No. 16. The list says the 62-year-old Noseworthy was paid $1.75 million in 2012.
Noseworthy outranked the leaders of two of Mayo's top competitors, Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Toby Cosgrove, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, is No. 72 on the list. He received compensation of $3.17 million. Dr. Paul Rothman, CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, was No. 86 on the list. He received compensation of $548,454.
No. 1 on the list is President Barack Obama, followed by Bernard Tyson, president and CEO of Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif. No. 3 is U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell.Stephen Hemsley, CEO of UnitedHealth Group in Minneapolis, is No. 4.
To choose the list, the pool of nominations was reduced to 300 candidates, based on the people who received the most nominations. Then, readers voted for their top five candidates and a final ranking was assembled using readers' input and input from Modern Healthcare's senior editors, according to the magazine's website.
Noseworthy was named president and CEO of Mayo in 2009. replacing Dr. Denis Cortese, who is retired. Previously, Noseworthy was the medical director of the Mayo Clinic Department of Development, a consultant in the Department of Neurology, and professor of neurology in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic.
Since his appointment, Noseworthy has been vocal about changes to national health-care policy, and he has aggressively laid out a strategic plan for Mayo to remain a viable force in health care, with such initiatives as a nationwide network of affiliates, the creation of a Destination Medical Center in Rochester and increased use of telemedicine.
