Reel in a movie coupon with donation to area food shelf

No matter what your Thanksgiving traditions are, many of us celebrate the season by giving and receiving. So while you’re enjoying your Thanksgiving feasts or a delicious entree on a night out, think about what you could do for those less fortunate.

Charter Communicationsis joining in the giving spirit by sponsoring a " Movies for Food" drive that supports Channel One Food Bank and Food Shelf. And for you, it’s a way to give back — and get a nice little present for yourself.

If you donate four non-perishable food items to a Charter office, you’ll get an On Demand movie coupon. Donate eight items and you’ll get two movie coupons. Plus, go online to www.moviesforfood.charter.com and enter their Movies for Food sweepstakes to win an HDTV, free service or a $100 gift card.

In Rochester, donations can be exchanged for movie coupons at Charter’s Bandel Road or Heritage Place Northwest locations.

Speaking of giving, ‘tis also the season for local benefits. In addition to the big winners at the annual March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction that I wrote about last week, another local restaurant won honors at Rochester Art Center’s annual Artini 2010gala on Nov. 6.

Several local restaurants entered their original "artistic martini" contest, competing for attendees’ votes. This year, Sonteswalked away with the prize for their "Frida Kahlo" martini. It lives on their regular martini menu; stop by from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on a "Martini Thursday" for $1 off their premium martinis and check it out.

And if that's not enough, Dara Moskowitz-Grumdahl, senior editor and wine columnist at Minnesota Monthly, recently named Sontes her overall favorite wine bar in Minnesota.

"I love their wine list. You need to have all different style of wine to suit all tastes ... but they should also have those things that makes a wine person’s heart beat faster, and Sontes has all of that," said Moskowitz-Grumdahl on a recent radio interview at The Current.

Sontes will celebrate its fourth anniversary in business on Saturday. Stop by and offer them congratulations.
