SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — When a restaurant takes on a new look it sometimes requires a new name. Managing proprietors Kevin King and Dan Lighter said they wanted a name that reflected the region.

Sioux County Livestock Co. Steaks and Chops was a natural choice for an area where agriculture is the No. 1 industry. Drive into Sioux Center from any direction and signs of agriculture abound, said Lighter.

King says the restaurant is like no other — it's half cafe and half steakhouse. Breakfast is served all day. The cafe-style menu begins at 11 a.m. and continues until closing. Because it's also a steakhouse, he best quality hand-cut steaks and breakfast items are served at the same time.

A popular breakfast choice is The Cattleman — two eggs, chicken fried steak and crispy hash browns smothered in white pepper gravy. The Pork Producer consists of two eggs, crispy hash browns and six-ounce ham steak.

Only top-end steaks are purchased. Possibly the best steak is the French Cut Tomahawk Ribeye, which is USDA Prime beef aged 28 days. The ribeye is seasoned and charbroiled to customer's request. All beef and pork served is Iowa raised.

Hot beef sandwiches are the most popular item at noon. Tender roast beef is served with mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. King describes it as just as your mother would have made it.

While steak is available any time after 11 a.m, prime rib is reserved for Friday and Saturday evenings. It's served with a choice of potato, side and Texas toast. Liver and onions is also on the menu.

If you are really hungry, The Fat Boy sandwich is for you. Two one-third pound burgers are topped with sliced ham, American and Swiss cheese, bacon strips, lettuce, tomato, onion and 1,000 Island Dressing. It's served on a Hoagie bun for $11.99.

Seafood, chicken, pasta and salads are also on the menu. Chicken, Fettuccine and seafood pasta selections are all served with their own white wine Alfredo sauce.

The Chicken Coop sandwich is a tender chicken breast that's breaded before frying, then topped with sauteed mushrooms, American and Swiss cheese. It's served on Texas Toast with any side for $8.99.

The establishment offers 12 flavors of Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream. The hard ice cream can be made into malt, shakes and sundaes.
