Marisa Lin, of Rochester, is one of the Minnesota winners in the annual national Letters About Literature Essay Contest.
The contest encourages young people to read, be inspired and write back to an author who has somehow changed their view of the world or themselves.
Lin wrote her letter to Elie Wiesel, author of "Night." Lin, a 10th grader at Century High School, took third place in the high school division.
In Minnesota, 1,414 students in grades four through 12 entered the contest. Nationally, 59,000 students participated.
The contest is a part of the Minnesota Book Awards, a program of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, along with local cosponsors the Pioneer Press and TwinCities.com and the Minnesota Council of Teachers of English.
