Stumble into a 'much more homey' eatery in Plainview

Last fall, Troyand Joy Stocktook over the restaurant overlooking Piper Hills Golf Course in Plainview. The Stocks renamed the restaurant The Stumble Inn 2(after their bar in Millville) and made some major changes to the decor and the menu. After a tip from an impressed customer, I took my first bite there recently.

I hadn’t been to The Hill Supper Club and Lounge before the Stocks changed it, but Troy assures me that they made plenty of changes, from moving the bar to a different location, opening things up and making it more comfortable. "It’s much more homey now than it was before," he says.

But what keeps his customers coming back is the food. The Stumble Inn 2 has plenty of options, from burger and fries baskets to pizza to steaks and salads. I had the cowboy burger, which is a hand-patted burger topped with barbecue sauce, cheddar, bacon and an onion ring. It was a great burger, and the fries were crispy and well-seasoned.

Troy says that other popular dishes are their Philly sandwich, shrimp basket and walleye dinner. According to Jean, my tipster, their apple cider pork chops are great, the taco salad is delicious and the onion rings are the best she’s ever had.

Food aside, it was fun just being at the Stumble Inn 2. It’s definitely a hometown hangout, with lots of Plainview-Elgin-Millville school gear for sale. It’s that place where everyone knows practically anyone who walks in the door. "It’s a close-knit community," Troy says.

For a bit of fun, head out to the Stumble Inn 2 for their Sweetheart dinner and dance on Feb. 12. Besides food and dancing, you can have a pillow fight with a friend – they’ll have a mattress to stand on, and you bring your own pillow to battle it out. The winner is the last person standing on the mattress.

The Stumble Inn is open on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The bar is open later, until 2 a.m. most nights.
