Put differently, letting a friendship get too out of balance with one person doing all of the giving and the other doing all of the taking is a sure way to kill the relationship. However, paying too much attention to who paid how much when and who owes whom what is against the spirit of generosity, as well as being just plain exhausting. It's best to have a general idea of the give and take and strive to always be more on the giving side of things.
Venus says: Each friendship should be custom made. If you have several friends, it's tempting to treat them all similarly, buying them similar birthday gifts, inviting them to similar events, talking about similar things... As efficient as it may seem to operate this way, individuals are not categories. Moving from "this is how I treat friends" to "this is how I treat you" is moving out of shallow ties based on generic behaviors and into true intimacy.
